Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left the family, and so she was raised by her mother, grandma and godparents. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder that was rooted in words as a young teenager. Ford's interest in acting began as a child. She joined the National Youth Theatre. She got into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just one week she decided it wasn't suitable for her. Ford made an application for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and finally won an interview on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of Ford's classmates. Ford earned her bachelor's degree in 1993. Before that, however, Ford made a television debut, appearing as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode in 1990. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Tate began her TV debut in the year 1991, appearing in shows such as The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. Tate was a regular performer on stage and was a member of the company's season 2000-2001. Tate was first noticed for her stand up comedy in the year 1996.
